Phoenix Exchange»About Us

large1Hi, my name is Randy Herd, owner and CEO of Phoenix Exchange, Inc. I am a third generation remanufacturer of heavy truck parts with quality and service at the forefront. I left my job as a construction superintendent in 1975 to go to work for my dad at Rebuilder International Truck Parts. I was taught not just to rebuild the part, but to understand why the unit failed; analyze that failure, and when possible make the unit as good as, or in some cases, better than OEM by making or providing components that extended the unit’s serviceable life. I left my dad in 1980 to start what is today known as Phoenix Exchange, Inc.

The Herd’s have a long history of integrity, quality and service when it comes to the remanufactured truck part industry. At Phoenix Exchange, Inc. that tradition lives on! Always investigate and evaluate new technology and the pursuit of the best quality products we can present to our customers. My Granddad, MC Herd (Pappy Herd), started in the trucking industry driving oil field trucks in Ranger, Texas in 1920. He was impressed with their size and pulling capacity compared to the cars of that time. This led him to the power train and eventually to the rebuilding of diesel engines and transmissions. He made his way into upper management, but his passion was always in the shop. Even though he was District Service Manager of AutoCar in 1948, he spent as much time as he could in the engine rebuilding shop. Texas Kenworth brought him out of retirement in 1970 to oversee their transmission rebuilding facility in Dallas, Texas. He retired again in 1975 from TKW at the age of 75. TKW employees called him for many years after his retirement for help in trouble shooting transmissions, due to his vast knowledge and expertise.

My Dad, John Ellis Herd, followed in his footsteps. In 1951, after he left AutoCar Odessa as branch Manager, he opened the Texas Kenworth branch in Odessa Texas for then owner, Tom Collins. In 1953 my Dad was brought back to Dallas as District Branch Manager of Texas Kenworth Corporate. He was Director of Maintenance for Earl Gibbons Oil Transportation, Acme Brick and Red Ball Motor Freight. He was known nationally for his innovations in fleet preventive maintenance and driver safety programs. He introduced the first truck maintenance program for computers in the punch card format in the late 1950’s. He was on the board of the National Fleet Safety Council in the mid 1960’s and was the inspiration for the grooves that are now cut in the highway on curves to dissipate the water, as he discovered that trucks especially with empty trailers hydro-planed at 55 MPH in the rain. He gained national recognition for the programs he developed and was featured in many Truck Fleet magazines during the 1960’s and 70’s. In 1971, he started Rebuilder International. No one offered remanufactured heavy duty parts for trucks electrical system back then. Alternators and starters were not exchanged in a like new condition in those days. He went on to remanufacture about every component on a truck. I don’t have enough space to list all of my Dad’s accomplishments or the awards bestowed upon him, but I did include some of the pictures from the trucking days of my Granddad.
